About The School

Floyd Middle Magnet School for Math, Science, and Technology opened its doors as the first middle school in the Montgomery Public School System for the 1996-1997 School year. As a magnet program, we provide a wide variety of choices to parents and experiences to students. The school as a whole has been very successful in reaching its goals.

About the School

The mission of Floyd Middle Magnet School is to educate students at higher levels of learning with an emphasis on math, science and technology, in a safe and caring environment. The school mission statement drives our focus to ensure improved student academic achievement with the administrators and faculty making certain that Floyd Middle Magnet operates based on current research and best practices following the Alabama Course of Study, Alabama High School Graduation Exam objectives, and the curriculum. In addition, Floyd Middle Magnet’s core teachers (math, science, English, and social studies) offer weekly tutoring sessions, before or after school, which are available to all students.

Floyd Middle Magnet School's community encompasses all of Montgomery County. We are a magnet school and draw students from the entire area. The current student enrollment is 506 students with the faculty including: two administrators, twenty-four Highly Qualified teachers, a counselor and a media specialist. We also have eight classified employees: one secretary, one bookkeeper, three custodians, one library aide, one guidance aide, and one student aide.

Floyd Middle Magnet School has a student application requirement which accepts 60% of students based on their cumulative grade point average with the remainder of student applicants chosen through a random selection process. Once students are enrolled in the school, they must complete the academic year with a 2.5 GPA in core courses, and exhibit satisfactory behavior in order to return the following year.

During the 2011-2012 school year, all stakeholders were surveyed with results indicating that 74% of students, 79% of parents and 82% of the staff agreed or strongly agreed that the administration and teachers hold high expectations for students in all classes. Program offerings are also noted as one of our strengths by all three groups. Students, parents, and staff responding with 71%, 86% and 99% respectively, agreeing or strongly agreeing that Floyd Middle Magnet offers a challenging curriculum and learning experiences.

Along those lines, Floyd Middle Magnet School students consistently exceed standards and Annual Measurable Objectives (AMO's) set by the State of Alabama. Floyd Middle Magnet continues to show gains in almost every category of standardized test scores each year, and has consistently met 100% of its Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) goals. Each year Floyd Middle School students take several state assessments along with other students in the system. The assessment that students took in the spring of 2012 was the Alabama Reading and Math Test (ARMT). Those results indicated that 100% of sixth grade students met the standards in reading, and 95% met or exceeded the standards (Levels III and IV) in math. For seventh grade students the 2012 ARMT results showed 100% of our students met or exceeded the standards in reading and 94% met or exceeded the standards in math. Eighth grade ARMT results indicated that 99% of students met or exceeded standards in reading, and 97% of eighth graders scored on levels III and IV in math.

As a result of the hard work of all stakeholders, Floyd Middle Magnet students' performance has earned the school the designation of being named a Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) National Pacesetter School in 2011-2013. The award is based on the success of local school leaders and teachers in improving school practices and raising student achievement. Floyd Middle Magnet was one of only two Alabama schools to earn this distinction. The award is sponsored by the Southern Regional Education Board.

Parental support and the community support are an integral part of the success of Floyd Middle Magnet School. Floyd Middle has a very active Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). In addition to PTSA meetings the PTSA sponsors various fund raising events throughout the school year. The school, with the help of parents and students, hosts school tours during the magnet application period (January-February) at which time visitors are escorted through the school to observe classroom instruction and to experience the school climate.

We are proud of our success at Floyd which is based on our commitment to teaching all students at higher levels of learning in a safe and caring environment.
